Fitness, Sakura Matsuri, and a Podcast Update

by admin on May 3, 2013 at 11:48 am
Posted In: Updates

I know I haven’t gotten the newest podcast out yet.  It is in the works.  It’s not excuse, but the reason I am taking so long with it is that this is the first video podcast, so I am trying to figure out the technical aspect of it.  I’m hoping to get it out soon, though.

I am working on getting myself into shape.  I have started a Couch to 5K program and signed up for the Foam Fest in NY at the end of June.  I’m actually running!  Look at me go!  It’s kind of amazing considering it’s an exercise I had avoided throughout my entire athletic career in high school and college.  Now that it’s not necessary, I’m doing it.  Weird how things work that way.  I also need to do some strength training.  I’m hoping to start that next week.  (It was supposed to start this week, but things got in the way like SEEING IRON MAN 3 TWO DAYS BEFORE IT WAS RELEASED!  Yeah, I’m that baller.)

Ashitaka was finished in time for the Sakura Matsuri in DC.  I have some shots, but they still need to be edited.  There are actually a few updates that need to be made to the costuming section of the site.  For example, Bilbo and Hawkeye still have to be added.  I’m hoping to get some updates done next week.

CosTALK Episode 002: Beginning a New Cosplay

by admin on March 6, 2013 at 10:25 pm
Posted In: CosTALK

And Episode 002 is off the ground!

This episode focuses on beginning a new cosplay.  I talk about how to go about selecting a character, what to look for at the fabric store, and materials that can be used for props!  Also, in case I didn’t mention it enough in the episode, tutorials for all of these things can be found online.

Katsucon 19 Review

by admin on March 5, 2013 at 12:52 pm
Posted In: convention

I’m sorry about the lack of updates recently.  I have a few things to put up in the near future.  I have galleries to update (namely Hawkeye, Spike, Crowley, and Bilbo Baggins), and I am finally editing Episode 2 of CosTALK.  That will be up in the next few days.

Katsucon 19 Review

I have been an attendee at Katsucon for seven years and seen it through three different hotels.  This year was it’s fourth at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, MD.  It was host to the World Cosplay Summit preliminaries again, and welcomed many guests including Steven Blum, Chris and Greg Ayres, Crispin Freeman, Monica Rial, and the Symphonic Anime Orchestra.

For me, it was incredible.  Truly incredible.  So many friends, so many photos, and so many good times.

There were some issues with another convention that was at the Gaylord at the same time (the B’nai B’rith Youth Organization International Conference, or BBYO IC).  There were several incidents from both sides, but I will not go into specifics because I only witnessed a few of the minor conflicts.

Katsucon security is notorious for being even more overbearing and frustrating to con-goers than other convention staff.  This year was no different.  I, myself, had a few run-ins regarding my bow and arrows.  The bow I can understand because it was in the prop guidelines, but the arrows were no where in the prop guidelines.  The people that confronted me on them were also very obnoxious about it.  If nothing else, Katsucon should be training their security staff how to deal with people without being arrogant and obnoxious.

The hotel, too, treated Katsucon members with little respect.  We called at one point to simply get toilet paper sent up.  One of our roommates travels a lot for work, and deals with hotels at least twice a month.  She is a gold member for a few chains, including the one we were staying at.  Therefore, she knows how a hotel is supposed to respond to it’s guests.  The way the Gaylord behaved, especially in this situation, did not correspond with proper hotel etiquette.  The woman that answered the phone asked which convention we were with and when we told her Katsucon, she abruptly said we could have one and hung up – essentially implying that anyone from our convention was too immature to handle two rolls without using it to TP the hallways or something.

Aside from these two things, the convention was amazing.  Friends from all over the country were there and, though official numbers have not yet been released, I believe there were over 10,000 attendees this year.

I was a participant in 3 professional photoshoots over the course of the weekend (Sherlock, My Little Pony, and Supernatural) and took home the award for Best Novice of the Weekend in Hall Cosplay.

Overall, I would highly recommend Katsucon to anyone and you can be sure I will be attending again next year.

Katsucon on the Horizon

by admin on February 7, 2013 at 1:49 pm
Posted In: convention

Katsucon 19 in National Harbor, MD is now less than a week away.  I’m luckily in a position where I have the majority of my costumes done, but there’s still a lot left to do!  At this point, the lineup for this con is as follows:

  • Reichenbach John Watson (Sherlock)
  • Blogger John Watson (Sherlock)
  • Potterlock John Watson (Sherlock AU)
  • Spike (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic)
  • Crowley (Supernatural)
  • Bilbo Baggins(The Hobbit)
  • Peter Pettigrew (Harry Potter)
  • Peeta Mellark (The Hunger Games)
  • Rory Williams (Wedding of River Song) (Doctor Who)
  • Hawkeye (Hawkeye)
  • Jacuzzi Splott (Baccano)

There may be things dropped, but for now that’s what’s coming with me!  Most of what I have left to do is prop and accessory stuff, but its still time-consuming.

Preparation also includes getting the newest episode of CosTALK recorded and edited so that it will be released on the Saturday of the convention.

Who else is coming to Katsucon?  What are you bringing?

CosTALK Episode 001: Cosplay 101

by admin on January 22, 2013 at 10:33 pm
Posted In: CosTALK

Episode 1 is here!  This episode centers around the absolute base level of cosplay.  What is it about?  Where did it start?  Where did the word even come from?

First, I talk about why I changed the name of the podcast.  The reason is that I did not do my research correctly.  There is a podcast called Coscast run by NerdReactor, a well known and well respected site in the nerd community.  Head on over and check out their podcast and their site as a whole.  It’s a lot of fun to just look around at the awesome articles, too!

From there, I go on to discuss the definition of cosplay, peoples reasons for cosplaying, and the origins of cosplay.

I talk about the differences between eastern and western cosplay, which, as I say in the episode, may be a sore spot for some people.  These are my takes on the differences based on what I have experienced for myself and what I have found in my research.  If you disagree with anything I say, please feel free to drop me a line.

The last topic I touch on in this episode is cosplay competition.
